Over the weekend I went into Tesco, Morrisons and Lidl UK to find the 'pledge' all four of these Supermarkets made two years ago seems to have evaporated?
As a Recap, Lidl lead the way back in 2014, with intention of removing confectionary from all of its checkouts, stating:
"We know how difficult it can be to say no to pester power, so by removing sweets and chocolates from our tills we can make it easier for parents to reward children in healthier ways."
Tescos followed suit with then, CEO Philip Clarke boasting:
"We all know how easy it is to be tempted by sugary snacks at the checkout, and we want to help our customers lead healthier lives"
Meanwhile, Morrisons, following a report by Which? stated at the time they'd 'review their policy' and later stated they would address snacks at checkouts to positively contribute to healthier lifestyles...
Four years later, with Easter around the corner, the Supermarket giants seem to have decided that they've done their bit and have reverted back to old ways:
The Morrisons I visited looked like a Cadburys factory whilst stood at their self service checkouts as did Sainsbury's, with their tempting Wonka factory gondoliers at children's eye level; meanwhile Tesco's Krispy Creme Doughnuts were conveniently placed directly next to the checkouts where I saw the immediate impact of pester power from one young lad who walked off with two doughnuts in tow, with his mum clearly not up for a battle.
As a Nation, we are trying; but to what extent do supermarkets need to be SHAMED for not taking responsibility?
